How Sunbeam grew

February 1996

6 children with grubby faces and bright smiles troop into the CRY office at Arthur Road.

May 1996

The ‘Neighbourhood Project’ begins. CRY staff pool in resources.

May 1996 - 98

The Neighbourhood Project blossoms, with as many as 18 children. Some of the children are admitted to the nearby municipal school.

May 1998

The first Sunbeam centre is set up in a rented chawl room at Arthur Road. The first teacher is hired. Financial aid pours in from CRY staff in Delhi, Bangalore, Calcutta and Chennai

Jan 1999

With the construction at Arthur Road almost complete, families migrate to Phoenix Mills, Lower Parel. A second Sunbeam centre is set up here with 68 children.

June 1999

A third centre comes up at Kamala Mills, Lower Parel, with 62 children.

Dec 10, 1999

Sunbeam is registered as a Trust with three trustees - Khurshid Dabdi, Sangeeta Kapila and Leela Alvares.

Dec 1999

Arthur Road centre is shut down as children are transferred to Phoenix & Kamala Mills.

Jan 2000

A pro-active child, Bhurjamma, helps set up the Dadar centre. The number of teachers now goes up to 7.

April 2000

Investment bankers from ASK Raymond James, Sameer and Asit Koticha step in to underwrite the entire project. Now, Sunbeam extends its outreach to street and slum children.

May 2000 - April 2002

Centres are set up at Chandanwadi (street children), Bhuleshwar (street children), Worli (slum children) and Bandra (slum children).

June 2000

The first batch of Sunbeam children are promoted to the secondary section. Celebrations all around!

February 2001

Recreation is an integral part of the curriculum at Sunbeam. Camps, sporting events, excursions and happy days follow.

March 2001

The first camp is held at Aksa. The children have such a great time they don’t want to come back!

December 2001

A donor’s contribution makes the first outstation camp possible. 40 children have an amazing time in the hills of Karjat.

2003

The constructions at Dadar and Phoenix Mills come to an end. Children move to the Sunbeam Centre at Kamala Mills.

June 2003

The first batch of children move to higher secondary. They've now been with Sunbeam for over 5 years.

March 2004

5 centres, 650 smiling children… and an exciting journey ahead.

September 2005

Outreach growing to 1000 child beneficiaries

Next 5 years

Consolidating our efforts to bring about quality education for our existing 1000 beneficiaries.

June 2006

The first batch of children move to college.
